A Recipe for a Little January Pick-Me-Up!

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

We all know that sometimes January can get a little dreary in some parts of the world, and that’s definitely the case here right now!  It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s snowy and slushy, and just not very nice overall!  The weather forecast for the next week is rain.  The previous week’s forecast?  Snow and ice.

In order to brighten things up a little, I’ve been playing with my essential oils lately, and the end result of that is this post!  This oil blend smells fantastic and is very uplifting – perfect for this time of year.  I have been putting it in my diffuser and I’ve also got it mixed with a carrier oil that I’ve been rubbing onto my skin, and I feel 100% better than I did a few days ago!

For this blend, you should use equal parts of:

  • Lemongrass essential oil
  • Sweet orange essential oil
  • Grapefruit essential oil

In my diffuser, I am using two drops of each in about 3/4 a cup of water.  In the carrier oil, I mixed 10 drops of each in about 1/2 a cup of jojoba oil.  I’m also contemplating making a balm with this oil combination, which would combine the oils, a bit of jojoba oil, beeswax and solid coconut oil.

Let me know if you try this blend, and how it works for you!

Witchy Business News Update – December 3, 2016

Hi everyone!

I know it’s been a while, and I apologize.  Sometimes life just gets busy, and there’s not a whole lot we can do about it…I’m sure everyone can relate!

Some of the plans I’ve had for things to add to the site have been a bit delayed, but I am pleased to announce a couple of things.

First of all, I’ve added a couple of new free downloads!  I’ve attached them to the bottom of this post for your convenience, but they can also be found on the Downloads page.  I’m working on something else for you guys as far as downloadable things go, and I plan to have more information about that soon.

PrintAlso, just in time for the holidays, I’ve added the option to purchase gift certificates to my shop!  This is a feature that a number of people have requested, and I’m happy to be able to offer them now.

You may have noticed that I’ve also updated the look of the site just in time for the holidays…I figured it was about time!  I LOVE this time of year, and always love to share that with you guys as well.

I promise not to leave it so long before my next update, but for now I’ve got to go take care of some readings that people have booked.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments, as usual!

Book Review: Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Tarot

tarotI love a good tarot book, and, as such, you can imagine my excitement when I saw that Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Tarot, by Anthony Louis, was up for pre-order on Amazon!

Needless to say, this book was in my cart and my order submitted before I even gave it a second thought.  Now that it’s arrived and I’ve had some time to look it over, I have to say…it definitely was worth the hype!

This book is a great resource for both beginners and seasoned tarot readers.  The thing I like most about it is the fact that, for each card, a variety of interpretations from different tarot “authorities” are listed.  It’s really interesting to see how some aspects of a card’s interpretation are the same across the board, and some are radically different.  The book also gives various correspondences for each card, all organized by card, so it’s easy to find whatever you’re looking for.

If you’re just starting out with the tarot, I would recommend this book as a good starting point.  It’s a fairly large book, and may seem a bit overwhelming, but if you are able to process information and love a good resource that you’ll use long after you pass the beginner stage, this is the one for you.

If you’re a seasoned reader, I would also recommend this book.  It’s a well-written, interesting read, and I’ve found information in it that I didn’t know and that I’ve found very useful.  Having the correspondences there is also nice.

I see this book becoming my go-to tarot reference for most things, unless I’m looking for something related to a specific deck.  Even then, depending on the deck, this book might be able to provide me with what I’m looking for.

You can grab this book directly from Llewellyn by clicking here, or from Amazon.ca by clicking here.

Deck Recommendation: Living Reiki Healing Cards

IMG_0452A little something different on this deck recommendation.  These cards aren’t oracle or tarot cards per se.  Rather, they are cards that can be used for inspiration, and are definitely not limited to those who practice Reiki!

The purpose of these cards is to serve as a daily reminder of things we should be thankful for, and things we should work on.  This is the one deck I use almost every single day – I like to start off the day with a bit of inspiration, and I like to start my Reiki sessions by pulling a card from this deck and spending a moment or two meditating on it before I begin.

I have found that some people find the name of this deck misleading, and think they must  be involved with Reiki in order to use them, but that is absolutely not the case.  If you’re looking for a simple deck to use for daily affirmations, or whenever you need a little pick-me-up, then this is the deck you want.  There is absolutely nothing “negative” in this deck, and none of the messages will make you second guess yourself.

Witchy Business News Update – August 13, 2016

Symbolic Crystal Healing HandHi everyone!

I just wanted to post a news update, and keep you apprised of what’s been going on around here.

First of all, I’m sure you’ve noticed all the new reading types and items in the shop the last few weeks!  A common comment I’ve had is that people aren’t sure what they’re getting if they buy a general psychic reading – some people like to be surprised, but others also like it to be more specific.  To accommodate this, I’ve added a bunch of specific readings for various situations, so that you can pick what you’d like.  These readings can be fun, and I encourage you to take a look!

I’d also like to provide an update on the guided meditations I’ve been working on!  They are shaping up nicely, and I’m getting ready to record them.  I have some shorter ones that I will be offering as free downloads, and some longer ones that will be in the shop, priced affordably for your convenience!  While I would love to give everything away for free, I hope that my readers appreciate how much time maintaining this website, creating guided meditations and other things for you and doing readings takes, and that you are not resentful when I charge for things.  I try to make things even more affordable for you by offering frequent sales, as I’m sure you’ve seen if you follow me on Instagram!

Speaking of Instagram, if you’re not already following me, you really should be!  I’ve been doing daily card pulls every day and posting them there with a little comment – a great way to get a little inspiration for your days!  Click here to follow me now.  Sales and things are also always posted there.

I’m still looking for feedback with respect to what you guys want for free downloads – please take a moment and answer this quick poll.

Thank you so much!

Your Favourite Herbs!

I’m Bottle Of Essential Oil With Herbs Holy Basil Flower, Basil Flowwanting to hear from you guys!  I absolutely love doing posts featuring certain herbs, but I know that what I like might not be what you guys want to read about!

Please take two seconds to submit your top 5 favourite herbs in the form below, so that I’ve got some guidance!  Don’t have 5?  No problem….submit how ever many you’d like.

As you can see from the form, this is completely anonymous…I will not know who submits what, so you’re free to submit anything you’d like.  As you know, I’m always looking to post the things that my readers are looking for.

Whether your favourites are the run-of-the-mill, every day ones (lavender, chamomile, etc.) or more obscure things, I would love some ideas for herbs to feature on my blog.  I’d also love it if you leave a comment highlighting WHY you love the herbs that you do, and what you use them for.  Let’s have some fun with this!  In the coming weeks, I’ll do a similar poll for crystals as well.  Stay tuned for that one!

Please list your top 5 favourite herbs, in order from 1-5.

Don’t Forget the Free Downloads!

Whether you’re a long-time visitor, or are completely new to my site, you’ve probably visited the Free Downloads page.

I can’t see who is downloading what, of course, but I CAN see how many times things are being downloaded, and every time you guys download something, I get a little excited!  I’m so happy that you’re taking the time to download the things that I have provided for you, and will provide for you in the future!

If you’re completely new and haven’t visited the site before, welcome!  Below are all of the current free download offerings, for your convenience.  If there is something you’d like to see featured as a free download, please take a moment to complete this brief poll, so that I know what you want!

Deck Recommendation: The Psychic Tarot

IMG_0263I’ll start off by saying that the name “The Psychic Tarot” is a bit misleading on this deck – it is more a cross between an oracle deck and a tarot deck, leaning towards the oracle side of things.  This was a somewhat new concept to me when I purchased this deck (I have nothing else that follows this format to this extent), but I wasn’t going to let that stop me, and you shouldn’t either!

The Psychic Tarot is a very robust deck – it is one of the biggest that I have, not in the size of cards, but in the size of the deck itself.  Lots of cards…you really have your hands full when you use it!  John Holland has done a fantastic job with this deck – it has so many uses.

There are a lot of specific cards (chakras, etc.), and I find that sometimes using the whole deck can be a bit overwhelming and inappropriate for a reading.  When that’s the case, I’ll sometimes pull certain sets of cards from it (again, the chakras as an example) and ONLY use those cards.  I’ve also used cards from this deck to represent people or things when conducting Reiki healing sessions.

The artwork on these cards is absolutely stunning.  Periodically, I’ll pull out decks and just look through them, allowing my energy to flow into them and their energy to flow into me, and this deck is one of my favourites for that.  It’s such a rich and powerful deck, that I can’t help it!

One thing to note about these cards is that, due to the sheer number and variety of them, they may not be suitable for absolute beginners.  Some decks are well suited to beginners (a lot of Doreen Virtue’s decks, for example), but I would be wary of recommending this one to someone who has no experience.  The number of cards and the diversity of their meanings could be a bit overwhelming.  However, if you’ve had a bit of experience, then definitely don’t shy away from this one!

Salt and Its Many Uses

Salt in spoonIt’s no secret that salt is one of the most vital things most witches have.  It’s also no secret that there are an unthinkable amount of uses for salt in all aspects of our lives.  In this post, I’ll cover some of the most common uses, and some of the ways I use salt in my daily life.

Even in times when there wasn’t necessarily much available for witches, as long as there was a body of seawater available somewhere, there was salt.  I’ve extracted my own salt from the sea (I’m blessed to live within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean) and, while it is a process that can take a long time to yield enough salt to be useful, it is very rewarding, and I’ve found that salt to be my absolute favourite for use in spells and protection magic.  I don’t put it in anything I’m going to consume or anyone else is going to consume, but there are loads of ways to use it.  If you’re going to be ingesting something with your salt in it, make sure you use culinary-grade salt so that you know it’s safe to take internally.

If I’m buying salt, I tend to go for coarse sea salt…the coarser, the better!  The exception to this rule is if I know I’ll be dissolving it…then I’ll either pick up some already-ground sea salt, or grind it myself with my mortar and pestle.  You don’t need to use sea salt if it’s not accessible to you (it tends to be more pricey than its table counterpart)…any salt will do!

What I’m listing here are, of course, not ALL uses for salt – just some of the most common and some of my favourites.

  • Psychic protection:  Salt has been used for psychic protection since people started using salt because of its magical properties!  It is without a doubt one of the most-used substances because of this.  Use salt around yourself and your home to help aid in psychic protection.  Common ways of doing this include sprinkling a little salt in the corners of each room of your house, and surrounding the house itself with salt.  If you don’t have enough salt for that, or it’s not practical (you live in an apartment, etc.), a  little salt under your door and on your window sills can help keep negative psychic phenomena out.  Some people bathe in water with added salt prior to conducting psychic work to cleanse and protect themselves.  If you’re a person who casts a circle for your magical work, you might want to try outlining your circle with salt.
  • Purification and cleansing:  There are few things that are more purifying and cleansing than salt.  Objects buried in salt or washed in salt water are stripped of anything negative they may be carrying around, and are ready to serve you and allow you to work with them the way you need and/or want to.  I keep a little bag of sea salt in the box where my tarot and oracle cards live, and every week or so I take it out, spread the salt outside so it can go back to the earth, and replace it with clean salt.  I’ve never had a problem with my cards where I felt like there was something negative clinging to them, and I attribute this to my bag of salt.
  • Cleansing of crystals:  Salt is a common way to clean crystals, especially if you are not able to put them out to absorb the moonlight.  Depending on the type of crystal, it may be suitable to wash them with salt water, or simply lay them in a pile of salt.  Please keep in mind that some types of crystals should NOT get wet, and you should always research this before doing anything that involves putting your crystals in anything or washing them.  Some types will interact negatively with the water, and you may lose your crystals entirely, or damage them beyond repair.
  • Healing:  Whenever I make a healing salve, balm, or cream, I add a pinch of sea salt to the mix when it’s being heated.  The same goes for any tonics or brews that I’m making up.  Salt’s healing properties are enormous, and adding a pinch to whatever you’re making can help amplify the intended effect.  If it’s something that someone is going to drink, make sure you keep the pinch of salt small, as too much salt in something that a person is drinking can cause vomiting.

How do you use salt in your daily life?

Deck Recommendation: Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle

IMG_0269It’s been a while since I’ve done a deck recommendation, so I thought I’d better get on that!

The Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle deck, by Lucy Cavendish, is one of my absolute favourite decks.  The artwork is fantastic, and the cards have a real power to them.

When I use oracle cards, I like to use my intuition and combine them with the message on the card (if there is one), but I always read the booklet to get a general idea about the deck, so that I know how to guide myself.  If you’re a person who relies heavily on the booklet, you’ll love this deck…there is lots of information for each card.  The illustrations and the phrases on the cards are also quite telling, and the combination of these two things makes this a great deck for everyone from new to experienced readers.

When I hold these cards, I can feel their power, and that’s what I always look for in a deck I know will be used for a lot of readings.  As I’ve said before, I’m a collector, so I’ve got all sorts of decks that don’t get regular use and are merely around because I like them, but this isn’t one of those.  I regularly use this in readings, and it never lets me down.

One thing to note about these cards is that they are quite big…even bigger than a normal oracle deck.  For someone like me, who has big hands, this isn’t an issue, but people with smaller hands might have trouble holding onto them to shuffle.  Of course, there are other ways of shuffling cards than doing it in your hands, and you should definitely not let that stop you from investing in this deck!

Guided Meditations

fresh sunrise at mountainGuided meditations are something I’ve posted about before, and this definitely won’t be the last time I talk about them!  Guided meditations are useful for all sorts of things…general relaxation, healing, exploring your inner self, etc.  Most guided meditations tend to be fairly general, so that they’re accessible to a wide audience.  Most of the time, I think that’s a good thing, but sometimes we just need something a little more specific.

I’m excited to announce that I’m currently working on writing a series of guided meditations geared specifically towards witchy folks!  I anticipate having them available for you guys in about a month…they’re currently being written and re-written over and over, until I’m happy with them!  If there’s a topic you’d like to see explored in a guided meditation, be sure to mention it in the comments!

I’ve also got a treat for you today…a new free download!  This healing meditation was not written by me, but I have permission to share it, and thought it was something that a lot of you may find useful.  Meditation in general can be difficult for people, as it can be hard to clear the mind, but having a guided meditation playing softly in the background can be very helpful in keeping you grounded and making sure you are able to fully connect with yourself internally and benefit from the meditation.

I meditate every day, and quite often I’ll use a guided meditation just to keep me connected.  We all have busy lives, and it can definitely be a challenge to both find time and find peace and quiet in order to meditate.  Guided meditations can help you work past that, and make time for yourself.

Whenever I do a guided meditation, I always make sure I’m either sitting or lying in a place where I won’t be disturbed.  These should never be done while you’re driving or doing anything else that requires your full attention.  If you fall asleep, that’s ok (happens to me often!)…your subconscious still hears the guided meditation, and you still receive its benefits.

Witch, Heal Thyself

Reiki ShareAs someone who has an extensive history of practicing various healing arts, I’ve always felt a bit like a failure at healing myself.  My health hasn’t been the best for a number of years, but sometimes I think I’ve just been too busy healing others to notice, until things get to their breaking point.

Healing is a funny thing – whether you’re in the healing profession as something like a Reiki practitioner, or are trained in Western medicine, somehow it’s always easier to take care of others than it is to take care of yourself.

I have a couple of conditions that are somewhat chronic and flare up from time to time, but I deal with it – because hey, you can’t think about it too much and dwell on it, if you’re crazily busy all the time!  I’m a bit of a workaholic, and it’s so easy to just work constantly and ignore what my body is telling me.

Mental health, physical health, spiritual health…they are all connected, and when you neglect one, the others suffer.  I know that in the times of my greatest work overload, all three suffer for me, and it can take a really long time to recover.

There are some things that I try and do every day, such as eating well, taking the supplements my Chinese medicine doctor has suggested, and giving myself at least one daily Reiki session, but at the busiest of times and when I need them the most, these fall to the wayside.

I can’t be the only one that things everything is ok until something crashes, and then sees the signs in retrospect, when it is far, FAR too late to repair what’s been undone.  As much as we like to blame ourselves when our health crumbles…most of the time, it’s not our fault.  Of course, that doesn’t stop our thoughts...if only I had eaten better, slept more, meditated, taken those vitamins, gotten more exercise...the list that our mind throws at us is endless.  It’s terrifying, sometimes.  We are our own worst enemies when it comes to criticism.

For me, I find that once I’ve reached that breaking point, I need to pull myself together and take time to do all the things I’ve been neglecting…sleep, eat properly, meditate, give myself Reiki…important things in my life.  We all need sleep, and we all need to eat properly…meditation and Reiki are optional, of course, but I have made them part of my routine of self-care.

When we can’t heal ourselves, it’s important to seek proper medical care.  Personally, I’ve sought the care of Western medicine, and, when that was not able to provide me with satisfactory results, I turned to traditional Chinese medicine.  I have acupuncture sessions twice a week, and take three Chinese herbal supplements, and I have noticed great improvements.  My sleep schedule is more regular now (no more burning the midnight oil for me), I have more energy, and overall I’m just happier and more relaxed.

I’ve also cut out some of my work, choosing to focus on other things and drop some things to save my sanity.  That’s the nice thing about freelance work…you can be picky if you need to be, and can select the clients YOU want to work with, assuming you’ve got enough to pay the bills.

Taking care of yourself should be your #1 priority, regardless of who or where you are.  If you don’t take care of yourself, and your body, mind, or spirit breaks, how can you continue to do the things people count on you to do?  If you’re a healer, for example, you can’t heal people if you don’t take care of yourself and make sure that you’re physically and mentally able to do so!  A teacher can’t teach if they don’t give themselves the tools they need to rest and recover from the demands of that job.  I could go on and on.  Taking care of yourself is REALLY important!

I’m interested to read what kinds of things my readers do for self-care…leave a comment and let me know!  You guys are usually a fairly quiet bunch, but I’m really interested to see others share their knowledge and techniques – it can be a learning activity for everyone involved.
